Jojo Rabbit

Winner of Best Adapted Screenplay and nominee for Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit provides a humorous look at Nazi Germany at the end of the Second World War. Completely dysfunctional and lacking resources, the government relies on propaganda to boost morale and sow hatred. One young boy, Johannes “Jojo” Betzler, wants to serve his country as best as he can, even if he’s very bad at it.

Robots

While it may be aimed at family audience, this underrated animated feature crafts a unique world and setting to create a humorous comment on the class system. In a world of robots, Rodney Copperbottom, a young idealistic inventor, travels to the big city to work for his idol, Bigweld. Only to find that Bigweld’s company is now managed by a sinister robot named Ratchet who is pushing expensive new parts only dooming older robots to become scrap metal. With the help of some new friends, Rodney searches to find Bigweld to get him to reclaim his company.

Lars and the Real Girl

Nominated for the Acadamy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Lars and the Real Girl tells the story of Lars Lindstrom, a friendly but socially anxious young man who begins a complicated relationship with a “sex doll” Bianca. While his small town and family start to worry about Lars, they soon begin to play along with his delusions and in the process, learn about themselves and what love truly is. Ryan Gosling received a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Lars and since its release in 2007, the film has become a cult favorite.

The Truman Show

A cleverly made satire on reality vs. media, The Truman Show is a film that perfectly balances utopia vs. dystopia. This 1999 three-time Golden Globe winner masterfully blends comedy with questions about media manipulation. Oblivious to the thousands of cameras watching his every move, naive and impressionable Truman Burbank finally opens his eyes and discovers his whole life has been orchestrated for entertainment.

A Man Called Ove

Depression and grieving are not typically subjects of comedy but Sweden’s submission for the 89th Academy Awards tackles these heavy issues with a light-touch. Ove, an irascible retiree and widower, who takes his ire out on his neighbors, is ready to give up on life due to his wife’s death, until an intrusive new neighbor intercedes.

White Chicks

When two black FBI agents botch a high profile drug bust, they are assigned to protect a pair of wealthy white sisters from high-profile kidnappers. Upon suffering minor facial injuries, the sisters decide to lay low, forcing the FBI agents to pose as the girls in order to catch the kidnappers. While much of the film’s humor relies upon slapstick, White Chicks is also a satirical commentary on the power dynamics of race, class, and gender roles.
